Dear Friends

World Earth Day is upon us and this year strikes a special chord as more and more people unite in local movements to act in collaboration with the planet.

On an international level, the US President brings world leaders together today in a call to action ahead of the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Summit November 2021 to be held here in Scotland.

Journeys in Design holds sustainability to heart in all our programmes and we’re delighted to announce a COP26 co-production with the Scottish Maritime Museum to exhibit “OCEANS POSTERS against plastic pollution” running from September to November in their stunning Maritime Museum complex in Irvine.

The exhibition is co-curated with Prof Helmut Langer, and is an international collaboration drawing together 35 Design Academies and Departments across 5 continents. It was first exhibited at the United Nations HQ in New York coincident with the first United Nations Ocean Conference held in June 2017.

Communications Design is one specialty with a particularly public remit finding form in posters and also in webpages, logos and even the choice of font. We’ll hear more on this in a Creative Encounter with Prof Langer next month.

Meantime, on Monday at noon, you can join a special panel discussion on Design and Sustainability, part of the Adjust/Adapt programme presented by the Scottish Furniture Makers Association and Visual Art Scotland.

Communications Design has rarely been more engaging than that presented by SFMA+VAS this year. You can link to the Adjust/Adapt Exhibition here and book a virtual seat for the Panel Discussion here.

Wherever you may be, I hope you may find time to allow
the restorative power of nature to enrich and energise your day
With best wishes from all the team,
John
