Flax Chair, made of Felted Flax and PLA Fibres

Journeys in Design has internationalism at its heart, developing strong links with Europe since our inception.

The Netherlands has been a key partner throughout our journey, a small nation that nurtures and promotes Design in evidently generative and generous ways.

In our inaugural year, operating at Gayfield Creative Spaces, we brought works by Piet Hein Eek and the man himself from Eindhoven to Edinburgh, exhibiting for the first time in Scotland and contributing to our Twilight Talks about Design with the support of Creative Scotland.

In 2015, we joined Artists and Designers across Europe in ArtCOP21 coincident with the UN Climate Change Summit in Paris, collaborating with Creative Carbon Scotland and Zero Waste Scotland. Last year, we brought the Flax Chair to Scotland for its first UK exhibition: this Dutch design by Christien Meindertsma has attained iconic status, also finding a home in Design Museum London and Vitra Design Museum.

We are also delighted to announce a final gathering later this year of Our Linen Stories from 14th September 2019 to 11th January 2020, this time at Dovecot Studios, a landmark centre for contemporary art, craft and design in Edinburgh, bringing the Meindertsma Chair together with Scottish and European Designs in Linen and Flax Fibre.

Whatever Brexit may mean, please join us as we continue to share in the Material Culture of our neighbour nations and celebrate the common threads that bind us all.

With very best wishes,
John
