Graduate combines passion for the mountains with sustainable materials

A journey in design across the snowfields of rural Perthshire in Scotland has resulted in a high-grade ski designed and manufactured under the brand Lonely Mountain Skis. Jamie Kunka combines traditional materials and ski-making techniques with the very latest technology to produce skis that look fantastic and perform exceptionally well.

Jamie’s school days in Aberdeen included frequent ski trips into the Cairngorms and at University in Dundee he studied product design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art with passions then combining professionally. All skis, cores and tooling are manufactured at his Birnam workshop in Perthshire and the small team use as many sustainable and natural materials as possible, 80% from grown sources.

Glass fibres are to fibreglass as flax fibres are to flax fibre bio-composites. The flax fibres used in the skis exhibited here are stronger than fibreglass and offer improved dampening. Flax Skis won the 2017 Gold Award at ISPO Munich, the worlds leading industry organisation for sports and outdoor performance equipment.
